Karen Ford: Finding Your Secret Story

A workshop for any writer who has felt the pull of a story struggling to emerge from an ocean of words. It’s about that novel you’ve never finished, those short stories that seem to go nowhere, or any piece of writing that falls short of your expectations.

Believe it or not, the answers are already in your work. Even in the earliest of drafts – perhaps especially in the earliest of drafts – the seeds of the story are there, placed by your subconscious. Using practical techniques to partner with your subconscious, you’ll learn to decipher your own text, and begin to uncover the stories buried within – stories that only you can tell.

Attendees have the option of reading work aloud for positive feedback, strictly moderated by the workshop leader. Bring 2-5 pages, beginnings preferred, and be prepared for your work to be mined for “teachable moments” of the concepts and techniques discussed.

Karen K. Ford is an award-winning author of short fiction whose honors include top prizes from Narrative magazine and bosque (the magazine.) Her work has been shortlisted for the Tobias Wolff Fiction Award, the Lorian Hemingway Short Story Prize and the Goldenberg Prize for Fiction from the Bellevue Literary Review and anthologized (twice) in Ginosko Literary Journal. Karen leads the Chautauqua Writers Group, which boasts legendary alumnus Ray Bradbury, friend to her late husband and former group leader, author S.L. Stebel. She speaks to groups of writers in person and online and leads a fiction workshop at the Santa Barbara Writers Conference. Karen lives in Southern California with her rescue mutt, Dude, where she writes, paints and works as a freelance editor and writing coach.
